LED light characteristics
The color of LED bulbs can range from ultraviolet (350nm) to infrared (700nm). The pattern of the emitted light (scattering angle) can range from very narrow, like a laser pointer, to as widely diffused as a flood / spot light. How bright the LED light is depends on the amount of current that passes through the lamp. Unfortunately, while the higher current level produces a brighter light, this also means that the lamp will not last long. LEDs are more energy efficient compared to incandescent bulbs, using only 1/5 to 1/10 of the energy, and they last at least 10 times. LEDs are also smaller and more powerful, have no filament, and usually no shatter glass.

Most LEDs don't emit much or any ultraviolet light, but there are exceptions (see below). LEDs use a mixture of different light colors to produce their "white" light instead of producing white light. Some LED lights will display one color more than others. LED lights that are "cold white" or more blue may be more attractive to insects than warmer or more yellowish lights.

Are LED lights attractive to insects or not?
Since most LEDs do not emit ultraviolet light and generate very little heat, they tend to be less attracted to insects. However, some insects may be attracted to one or more of the lighting colors used in the color mix used to produce "white" LED light. As insects are attracted to the light, LEDs emit very little heat and the wrong colors from the light spectrum visible to most insects, attracting a small number of insects to them.

Some LED lights are specially manufactured to produce UV light, such as those used in mosquito traps and plant growth lamps. Then there are those that are used to disinfect, sterilize, and treat some industrial coatings (for example, colored dental fillings, also called composite resins).

Not all LED spotlights are invisible to insects. UV LED headlamps, cool white LED lights, and neutral colored LED lights may attract insects to the same degree as fluorescent or halogen lamps. The best choice is the warm white or off white of the LED spotlights.

Most of the LED bulbs sold for residential lighting emit almost no ultraviolet light and are only slightly attractive to insects. LEDs that emit bluish or purple light attract some types of insects. Therefore, LED lights are a good choice if you want to reduce flying insect problems. Currently, the initial cost of LED bulbs is rather expensive but gets cheaper over time.
