Free to Play (F2P) Guide

Thu Mar 21, 2019 9:46 pm

Hello fellow Governors,
I often hear the phrase that Rise of Kingdoms (ROK) is a pay-to-win game and that free-to-play players have no shot in being competitive. While the previous phrase holds some truth when it comes to capturing certain objectives, it doesn't portray the whole story. In short, a free-to-play can still have fun and be competitive in this game. In my opinion this game offers great ways that makes this a reality that other similar games do not. With that being said, I have created my own Free to Play (F2P) guide; this guide aims not only to help Free to Play players, but also new and experienced players that are thinking of creating a new account.

Jumping:
The most important tip that I can give people is to use the jumping method when creating a new account. This tip becomes even more crucial when it comes to being a F2P user, as jumping will ensure you start with an advantage. To be more specific, by starting an account in an earlier kingdom (KD) you will start with more speedups, resources, tomes of knowledge (commander xp), and technology/building upgrades. Obviously, I am giving a quick overview of this method as this guide is about F2P users instead.

Starting Civilization:
When choosing your starting civilization, you should not be looking at the buffs or troops that a particular civilization gives, rather you should be looking for the best starting commander as ROK gives a lot of free commander specific sculptures through quests and events. Therefore, I suggest that F2P users start with either: Rome for Scipio or Britain for Boudica. In my opinion these two commanders are the best starting epic commanders for F2P users as Scipio is great for mixed army compositions and being a tank in open field and Boudica is great for nuking and killing barbarians. After choosing one of these civilizations for their starting commanders, you should look to change your civilization to Japan once you reach CH10 because they offer great buffs that increase the attack of all troops, scouting speed, and resource collection.

How to Spend Gems:
With gems being very limited when it comes to F2P players, this section will focus on how to efficiently use your gems to make the most of them! First, you should focus on rushing to VIP6 since it will offer you great buffs in every aspect of the game, while giving you the second builder permanently. After this, you should take advantage of the items in the VIP shop that level 6 unlocks, especially the AP potions and speedups. After this you should use resources and gems to buy items in the merchant shop every time it appears. A good strategy for what to buy in the merchant shop in terms of speed ups is to look for items that are more than 60% off.

How to Use Speedups:
A key aspect of speeding up technology and building upgrades is to leverage the alliance help system in the game. You should NOT be using speeds until you received the maximum amount of help from your alliance (you can check this by going to the help tab under the alliance page). Another great way to take advantage of your speed ups is to use speeds up that are specific for that type first, then use the general speed ups. In addition to these tips, you should be upgrading a building, training troops, gathering resources and researching technology at all times especially when going to bed.

Building/Technology Upgrades:
This next section will be very similar to the previous section, but this section will be relevant when not using speed ups. You should only upgrade what is needed to get the next CH, meaning you should rush your main buildings like the tavern, mine, wall, etc while neglecting other buildings such as resource production centers, the castle, watch tower, etc. The reason for rushing to the next CH as fast as possible is to get better technology unlocked, more specifically higher tier troops! In addition to higher tier troops, you should focus on upgrading technology that makes building/technology time go down as it will pay off in the long run!

Tips for Commanders:
One of the reasons I made a new account after playing ROK for a couple weeks is because I ruined my legendary and epic commanders. In order to avoid these critical mistakes, I thought it would be great to add this section in this guide. DO NOT add stars to a commander until their first skill is maxed, this is important as the first skill for every commander in the game (except for gathers) is always the best. Other tip that pertain to F2P users is to only focus on one legendary commander even though they are extremely hard to get but a 5/1/1/1 legendary commander is better than any epic commander. Please note that you should not double up on commander talent trees, only the primary commander talents are activated, plus by having commander specialize in different things you will be more versatile and ready for more situations.

Gathering Tips:
A huge disadvantage of being a F2P player is that resources will be scarce. To combat this issue, I would strongly suggest leveling up your gathering commanders as fast as possible, after your primary commanders. The soft limit for gathering commanders is 27, this will ensure you get the talent that gives you addition resources percentage and to complete the gathering tree you must reach level 37! Besides that, you should continuously exchange resources for resource buffs at the merchant shop and take advantage of runes (located at holy sites) that speed up gathering.

Suggest Commanders to Use:
As mentioned before, you should only focus on one legendary commander as sculptures are hard to get, the same goes for Epic commanders in some capacity. This means that you should limit the number of Epic commanders you plan on using. Below I have listed 5 Epic commanders that you should consider using and why:
· Scipio- great for armies consisting of multiple types of troops and gives powerful attack/defense buffs (tanky), paired with Joan or Boudica
· Boudica- great for both PVE and PVP making her very versatile, paired with Pela for PVP or Lohar for PVE
· Pela- great cavalry commander while offering great rage restoration, paired with Boudica
· Lohar- great for PVE and easy to max his skills up with Lohar rallies, paired with Boudica for PVE
· Joan- great gatherer and goes well with the commanders listed above, paired with almost everyone in game

[Extra] Best Way to Spend Money in ROK:
I figured I would add this extra section to my free to play guide as I commonly encounter F2P players that want to spend under $50 on this game but don’t know what to buy. With that being said, I would buy a couple bundles of King’s Coordination until you obtain all of the recharge gift packages. After getting all of the recharge gift packages, I would suggest buying the Gem Supply and Growth Fund (must be VIP5).

In conclusion, I had a blast writing this Free-to-Play (F2P) as I consulted with my alliance members on what they think would be beneficial for F2P players, which allowed interesting perspectives for this guide. I just wanted to close out this guide with one last thought that my fellow F2P alliance member brought up, “the biggest resource for a F2P player is time, the more you put in the more you can get out of it”.

THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, IF YOU DISAGREE POLITELY STATE BELOW :)

Problem is, as f2p, you need a lot of xp to make Boudica both ok in PvE and PvP. I have my lvl 41 Boudica developed in integration and skill. You get a lot of Lohar statues. And though Boudica is a better commander for barbs, this makes Lohar very attractive

I love to play online games in my free time and when I stressed with my writing work. I saw your post link when I was reading the australianhelp.com review of the user about writing services for taking the writer's help to my little sister. I read these guidelines for playing. Thank you for sharing this post with us.

If i only started the game while using this....
But since they introduced new civilizations a.k.a arabia, ottoman and the other one (the guy with helmet)
Scipio i agree cause that guy is one of the best epics.
Boudica i dont know never used her.
Im speaking from my experience.
Rome/byzantine/korea/chinese/japan/german.
This are great starters for kingdom
Rome as he stated.
Byzantine purely because of belisarius.
Korea since they have the greatest defence plus research
Chinese since their buffs.
Japan? I dont know but my friends say japan is one of the greatest starters.
German because of herman and their buffs.
A fair warning if you upgrade herman rank up i mean.
Dont look at his face trust me it's the stuff of nightmares.

Thank you for the guide. I will keep referring to it over the coming weeks.

I have just started playing the game (on day 2)

What level do you feel is respectable within month 1 and month 6, playing the game in F2P mode?

This will help me gauge how much time/effort is required to get to a decent level.

Thank you for your time.
